Entry 76 - Different Types of Humor

9/2/19

So here are some different types of humor I have witnessed throughout the ages and if you have enough investigator in you, maybe you can discover my favorite ones.

Self-deprecating humor: Make fun of yourself. People like this because it can be highly relatable, while some even like it because it makes them feel better about themselves.

Slapstick humor: Overexaggerated humor about events in life.

Controversial, edgy humor: When someone says something you would never actually say in real life, but phrases it like a joke, and people laugh at it. I would say this humor is a release for people. Some way that people deal with hard times is they shape it into a joke so that they have a reason to tell others and get it off their chest. For example, mental illness can be a controversial subject, but people might make a joke out of their mental illness and people can relate. I also call this therapy humor because a lot of dark things come out, but people either feel better after laughing about it or are shocked by how dark, edgy or controversial someone just went because they don't understand.

Awkward humor: Self-explanatory. People like to laugh at awkward moments because it releases built up tension from that situation that would otherwise become stressful if humor did not come to its rescue.

Wasn't expecting that humor: I call this 'Spongebob humor' because Spongebob has so many good examples of this. For example, Patrick answering the phone with his shoe and assuming someone is after him because he answered the phone. It doesn't really make sense, but sometimes when your brain doesn't expect a certain outcome, that initial shocks excites the brain and makes the person laugh. This is actually one of my favorite humors because it's the least triggering humor, it keeps people on their feet, it invites a lot of imagination and what ifs, and it can help people escape from their worries because you're so focused on what's next.

I'm better than you humor: Someone jokes about something you're doing that they think is stupid, wrong, not what they would do. Apparently this is more of a European style of humor, but I don't blame them, they've gone through a lot up there. This humor can be used in a way where the person puts people down at the expense of the other person's feelings, in many cases, to make themselves feel better. This humor is not a favorite of mine because you don't know what people are really going through deep down, and it can really do some inside damage to those around them if they're not careful.

Poo-poo pee-pee humor: Jokes that are often taboo to talk about on a daily basis such as awkward moments in the bathroom, naked jokes, farting joking, poop jokes, booger jokes, just anything gross and weird that people normally cringe at when they hear. This is another humor that allows people to release tension from awkward moments that have happened in real life, such as pooping at the same time and being mad that the girl's poo smells worse than yours, and you just wanted to poop in silence, but now you can't, and it sucks, and you want out, but you can't leave yet because your mid-poop.

Screaming humor: Self-explanatory. When you raise your voice, you tend to act more erratically, and many people like erratic behavior and find it funny because they don't tend to see it on a daily basis. Or maybe they can relate, and they secretly wanted to scream, but they never had the guts, so they like when someone screams for them, or it could even help them release erratic energy they've experienced in the past.

  1. This is an interesting topic! I'd like to note that based on the types of humor you use a lot people put you into categories, like "low self-esteem" if you do a lot of self-deprecating ones. Or too much of non norm following jokes might come off as weird, etc. (could be positive qualities too, like energetic, cute, etc)
